1898 Evinrude manual tilt issue

When putting the boat away for the winter, was lowering the motor and had the motor in tilt lever engaged higher than I wanted. When I flipped the lever, I heard a snap and saw the tilt lever cable shell broke. Ok. No problem, replaced the shell, screwed it on the end of the cable, popped it back on, and nothing. When looking closer, I see there is some fluid from the lift assembly tube I will call it. I was planning on replacing the cable, but it appears I might need t ass some oil or possible replace any seals in that. How? Lol. I am not very good with mechanical stuff and my boat has really not had any issues last 20 years so never needed to learn any. The cable does not seem to disconnect easily after unscrewing a large circular silver nut and I don't see a place to simply pump in trim fluid as if it had grease fittings like other parts of the motor.

Thanks in advance.

What engine? There are lots of 1988 evinrudes. Model would be extra helpful but general year/horsepower would be a good start

Welcome. These can be problematic and expensive, I've often replaced these with power trim and tilt. Good used kits available at Tim's Outboard Hackensack MN. Ship next day if they have one....tell them that Tim sent you. 218 682 2331
PS. Nice to have power trim, get it right .... Save on gas, which is pretty important at 5 miles per gallon and using non oxy @ $3.70
