"For the past 3 weeks I have had the low oil sensor going off on my Optimax. There was still smoke when I started it up and both oil tanks are full. I assumed the oil level sensor was bad and so did the mechanic so we replaced the sensor. I took it out yesterday and ran for about five minutes, shut it off and then started it again. When I started it the second time the alarm went off again. I am now concerned as there is minimal smoke when starting it (about as much smoke you get from exhaling a cigarette). Could this be the module that is bad? How can I cut off the oil injection system and mix the oil myself? is this ok to do until I get to the root of the problem?

Thanks in advance for any help with this!"

"Tyson, first of this is an Opti - you can't cut off the oil injection. The oil is simply mixed with air, not gas like a traditional two stroke.

The air is sucked into the cylinders the same way it is in a conventional two stroke - through the reeds into the crankcase and then the oil is injected - then the mixed air/oil enters the cylinders through the intake port.

The gas is injected first into your fuel rails, with traditional fuel injectors and then into the cylinder (when the piston is covering both the intake and exhaust ports) through the direct injectors. If you try and add oil to that equasion you are going to gum everything up.

Yes, you have a 2 stroke, but it IS "rocket science" - it's nothing like a conventional 2 stroke and the fixes used for conventionals do not apply to DFI's....

Secondly, your oil sensor DOES NOT tell you if the oil system is working properly. If the auto oil fails, as long as you have oil in the tank and the sensor is working properly you will never get an alarm.

The oil sensor tells you when your tank is getting empty. You oil injection can stop working and the first indication you may get is a welded piston - no alarm - the system doesn't work like that.

If it is still going off after replacement, take it back to Merc - would assume that they installed another bad sensor..."

"Thanks for the great info, Graham.

So if it is smoking when I start it up I should feel comfortable that the oil injection system is working properly, right?"

"Yes, in fact it may be gettin

"Yes, in fact it may be getting a little too much oil, which would not be a real problem - and not something you would want to mess with yourself.

As long as you find that your oil level is going down during operation, the system is probably functioning as designed."

thanks again Graham.

thanks again Graham.

One last quick question:
Are there any sings that I have low oil pressure or any other signs other than a welded piston?

"Nope - there is no system to tell you it isn't working.

You can test the system - belive I have the proceedure and specs if I dig, but the on-board "guardian" does not know whether the system is working or not - only can tell you when you are getting low on oil..."

THe computer does not know if

THe computer does not know if the system is working or not. It checks the circuit integrity between itself and the pump. That is all. That is unlikely to fail. The pumps do fail mechanically and over-oil. That will cause the smoke. To much pressure in the air side will force the oil through the injection system as well.

"Bandit, seems like you know what you are talking about, thanks! So here is the dilemma: I have a fourth of July trip this weekend. I am getting smoke on the start up (that is all I am doing at this time is starting it up). Should I be concerned about not getting sufficient oil or doing any major damage?"
