"I am looking to purchase a 1982 Chaparral with a 175 hp. Johnson on it.
The boat has a built in fuel tank but the motor needs a gas/oil mix. What is the easiest way to do the mixture?

Can I start with an empty gas tank and do the ratio as I am filling it with gas?

Should I mix in a portable gas tank first, and then fill the boat's tank?

Is is a lot of work to bypass the built in tank and draw straight from a 5 gallon portable tank?

Sorry for all the questions. Thank you. Andrea

PS. Does anyone know where I could find a general value for the motor? I live in MN.

"how big is the tank in the boat?
a 5 gallon tank is really to small to run with a 175,just start fresh with the one in the boat.
keep track of what goes in and mix it at 50:1
ratio"

"I have been told that it is around a 40 gallon tank.

So it does make sense to add the oil as I am filling it at the pump as long as I start empty and keep my ratio at 50:1. Common sense told me that this would be ok, but I wanted to double check.

Thank you for such a quick reply.

Andrea"

"I put 1/2 gal of oil for ever

"I put 1/2 gal of oil for every 25 gals of gas. 50:1 ratio. I put the oil in at the gas station, and then pump in the gas, full blast on the pump handle to get some mixing going. Then while trailering to the ramp, I touch the brakes a bit harder than normal a few times, sloshing the gas and oil in the tank. Maybe swing the trailer a bit while rolling, too. It will be mixed by the time you get to the ramp.
Twenty-five gals should take you about 50 miles.
Your motor is highly susceptible to ethanol damage. Get those fuel components replaced with ethanol resistant parts. Fuel line, primer bulb...etc. Water sep filter is almost a necessity. A whole lot of guys recommend Marine Sta-Bil in the tank with EVERY fillup.

You don't say what year the motor is. Just the boat. So, assuming the motor is a 1982 also, NADA website shows 180 to 200 bucks for a 175hp."

"nada may give a value for the engine but you cant really go with it,you wont find anyone selling a good running 175 for 200.00
in my area that would go for around 2000.00+-
jus looking at the pics it looks like that unit has some wear trailer looks rusty, but not to poor
as for the boat i woul say the seats and interior will have some slight flaws, just guessing but the price on that unit, around 3500/4500 range."

Premix doesnt provide enough o

Premix doesnt provide enough oil at high speed as a vro would i suspect trouble with that engine at that price as stated to good to be true is usually exactly that unless you have money to give away thats my opinion everybodys got 1

"Justaspark,

"Justaspark,
You have posted numerous times that "Premix doesn't provide enough oil". This goes against everything I know about outboards. All documentation points to the richest mix of the VRO being 50:1...same as premix. Could you provide some documentation or your reasoning for believing this?"

"Unless you are filling the tank and then transporting the boat, I would recommend using a 5 gal can and 16 oz oil blend to ensure it mixes properly."
