15hp Mariner driveshaft wont come out of lower unit.

My neighbor wanted me to look at this motor and give it a new impeller.

While taking the pump housing off one bolt was corroded bad enough that it broke off. This requires me to remove the bearing housing to get it out, which seems to require removing the drive shaft from the lower unit.

It wont come out under light persuasion, via vice grips (Wrapped to protect shaft) and a small hammer.

How do I get this out?

Would a puller be appropriate? I can fab up a puller with a clamp block having a reamed hole the diameter of the shaft and a pinch bolt and two pull bolts.

Like the one on the right.

There is a nut on the end of that shaft. Take out the bearing carrier and gear then you can take nut off.

I figured there was some kind of trick I was missing, but couldnt find the correct service manual for this.
