15hp evinrude model 15404s

I have a 15hp evinrude model 15404s that I inherited from my grandpa. The motor has never over heated and usually runs pretty good. Years back when my grandpa was still alive I got his boat out and put a few dollars into the motor and started using it. I had a friend replace the water pump and impeller back then because it has never shot a full stream of water out the pee hole. Usually when in the water at idle it just spits water. When going across the lake water just kinda of falls out the pee hole. I heard a trick about using weed wacker string and running down the pee hole to free a blockage. From the top it only went in the pee hole about 2 inches and was hitting something. I also tried tie wire with same results. Is this normal? Does the pee hole tube take a weird bend right about where I'm hitting something?

Also when I start it in the driveway with a garden hose and the muffs hooked up to it no water comes out of the pee hole at all. When starting motor in the driveway with the garden hose it starts with the first pull every time. When I get it to the lake it seems that I have to pull it 10-15 times to get it to start. I also would like to change the thermostat just because but have no idea where it's even at. Any tips, suggestions, or advice is greatly appreciated.

That motor did not come with a dedicated " pee indicator " --Someone may have added one.--Water just spits out with the exhaust relief.

If it didn't come with the pisser would it still have a hole for it? If it didn't come with why does water come out of it? Don't make any sense. The carburetor has never been rebuilt since I've had it. The motor runs great when I put seafoam in with the gas.

I came on here for advice as I can work on small engines and cars but boats are little different story. Here are some pics

I tried to upload some more pictures but having problem with the up loader. That motor has ran like that since I've had it for at least the last ten years. So I wouldn't call it abusing the motor. I'm sorry sounds like you really know a lot about boat motors and working on them. Not all of us are that fortunate.

The hole in the picture is the exhaust relief for idle.--Some water will spit out of there when engine is idling.---The later motors in say 78 came with a dedicated " pisser " that show a steady stream of water whenever the motor is running.

Thank you. I wan't sure it was a pisser hole or what. Like I said I wasn't sure about the water coming out of it. I don't know a lot about boat motors. The motor has never gotten hot. I just wanted to know about that and the starting hard when in the lake compared to using hose.

Keeping it simple.... Water fills the long exhaust housing between the lower unit and powerhead so as to keep it cooled somewhat. If not for this feature, the paint would burn off with its first running. That exhaust relief hole you spoke of is just that... a relief hole which allows the water to escape along with the exhaust when the water reaches a certain height. If not for that relief hole, the water would enter the bottom cylinder eventually.

The water telltale outlet that the later models incorporate (plastic fitting at the starboard aft portion of the hood pan) could be added to your engine if desired.

The hard starting when in the water problem... If between running the engine on a flushette and getting to the water, the engine is laying on its back in your trunk, truck, whatever, and the carburetor has not beeen run dry, a possibility exists that the remaining fuel in the carburetor has flowed out of the carburetor into the crankcase which would set up a slight flooding condition.

If on the other hand, the engine is secured to the boat in both cases... the normal starting procedure would be to pump the fuel primer bulb up hard, apply a small degree of throttle, pull the choke lever out (Choke ON), then crank the engine until it fires at which point the choke lever would be pushed in (Choke OFF). Is this your starting procedure?

Yes that is my starting procedure. This year hard starting in the lake hasn't happen. Last week it was one pull. The motor gets transported on boat. Not in trunk or truck. The paint on the head cover has never changed colors, and never melted anything. I ordered a new cover gasket, thermostat, and gasket. Just to change it to be safe. The fuel lines have been changed. The impeller and lower gear oil has been changed awhile ago. Boat doesn't get used that often. But using it more so far this year. I would love to rebuild the carb, but I never rebuilt one. I had to fix the pull start as that came apart on me.

When I change the thermostat should I leave it out and in a barrel of water to see if water is coming out there? Should I be running the motor out of gas by unplugging the fuel tank line after taking it out fishing? I have read the lee Roy's rambling site. I would like to ad a pisser on my motor. Is it easy? How to do it? Pointers? Lee roys rambling didn't really explain it very good. Info on that website is good but not detailed.

Thanks everyone.
