"I am not Boat expert, I just have basic Knowledge if that. Ok Here is my deal.I have a boat with a Mercury 150XR2 with pretty low hours. My boat was sitting for a few months for the winter, Which I did run it every now and then, it doesnt get that cold here. Well just to be safe for the spring I took into the shop to get a new water pump put in and had the engine inspected to make sure everything was working properly.Well the shop said I was good to go. So I took it out on the water today,I was out for maybe 20-30 minutes stop and go. I was running about 60mph, Then engine cut down to 40mph and shut off on me. So I go back to the engine to see what was wrong, The damn thing was on fire, luckly I had a fire extinguisher and put it out, then I opened the engine hook and the foam backing was on fire, got that put out too. Luckly the fire was only going for a few sec and did no fire damage but to the foam. Well I Inspected the block, The side where the fuel line runs in the oil injection pump, I guess thats what its called. Anyways it ripped it right off the engine block, Put a whole in the block Above that, and cracked the block in another place. Now what would have caused this? Overheating? What I am trying to figure out is, Is it something the shop did or did incorrectly? I mean it ran like a top before I took it to the shop, I just wanted to be safe and get a new water pump. Cause I am pretty sure the engine is junk now. Any info would be greatly appreciated, I am just a little On fire right now, Outboards/powerheads are not cheap."

"Mark, The fire was likely caused by either overheating or ignighted fuel, or perhaps both.

Is the paint blistered on the block that is not burned? That would signal an overheat. Is there any wiring capable of causing a speak, near where the EFI pump is?
The cracks in the block also suggest overheat. Did the overheat alarm work? Could you have heard it at 60MPH? You might look at the plugs for white deposits (overheat) or steam cleaning (Water infiltration). Does the motor turn over smoothly, or did it throw a rod?"

Sound to me you need to take this motor apart and examine the bits.It also sounds that you bought someone else's problem.

"Chris, As far as I know the paint is not blistered, I did examine it and all I see is a crack and a whole, Just clean breaks.I did look at the wire and I dont see any wires that could have started a fire unless some gas fumes made there way around. Yes you can here the alarm at 60mph, and yes it did come on but that was after the engine turned off on me... The even with the cracks the motor does still turn over and start but I dont want to run it, I dont like fires on boats in 50 degree water...lol.. But Like I said I took it took it out a little while back before I took it to the shop and it ran like a top."

"London,

I bought the Boat

"London,

I bought the Boat From My neighbor Last year. Me and him use to go out in it all the time and it ran like a top. He was a 60 year old man that really took care of his stuff. He sold it to me for cheap cause of his age and he knew my love for fishing. The engine has pretty low hrs on it. He has since pasted away. So I mean I didnt buy anyones problems. I let the boat sit for a few months and was trying to be safe and get some advice from you guys before taking it out. I have never owned a boat. So I took the advice and got a new water pump and had everything looked over. I know I need to examine more, I am not boat expert so I would have to have someone else take it apart. What i was trying to figure it out is that could the shop have done something wrong?"

I did a job for someone years

I did a job for someone years ago 1972 -125hp motor. The owner had it for 4 years and said it " magically exploded " he even thought it was insurance work.Hole in the block and motor a mess.I said over the phone that this motor must have been knocking for some time and he said " I don't think so " So I installed a low hrs used block and took the man for a spin to make sure it had the correct prop. After the test ride he said " it never started this well before and never sounded this quiet ". In other words many people do not have a good ear to the working of a motor.Post some pictures of the piston and rod that likely broke and we can tell you more.

Yeah I undserstand I am not sa

Yeah I undserstand I am not sating it magically exploded. I do have good hearing and I would know if it had been knocking. The thing is it went from running really good and smooth To a hole in the block and Fire. I will take some pictures today. Where do I post them at so you can view them.

"After further examination it

"After further examination it does look like I did throw a rod, I can see where the round peice of the end of the rod is broke in half. I did take pictures I just done know where to post them."

So what would cause it to thro

So what would cause it to throw a rod through the side of the block??? I need to know if it something the shop did wrong cause they just did a bunch of repairs.

Pull the oil pump off and pull

Pull the oil pump off and pull the metal gear out of the engine and see if there are any plastic on it. the oil injection may be the culprit.

"Mark, Any of several causes w

"Mark, Any of several causes will make the motor throw a rod. Poor lubrication, lean air-fuel mixture which causes overheat. Incorrect timing. Worn out bearings etc.

If you find damage on all cylinders, it could be the oil injection. Oil injection will affect all cylinders. It cannot affect only one."

THANKS GUYS for the info...Yea

THANKS GUYS for the info...Yeah its just my poor luck. The oil injection was working according to the shop. I premixed the fuel just to be sure. All I know is I got a rod sticking out of the block and a useless engine. I guess we live and learn. The Shop said the engine is toast. The Boat is an older boat so it would be foolish to Get a new motor on it unless I could find one dirt cheap. I am probably just gonna part out the motor and sell the parts on ebay that way I make some money back. I know the foot has to be worth something. I probably wouldnt get much for the Hull but I am sure the trailer is worth a little bit.
