"Terry, the XR6's were built between 1992 and 1999 and regardless of year were the same motor parts wise.
There is a welsh plug (silver disk about the size of a quarter) on the waterjacket that has the serial stamped in it. On motors this size it can be sometimes difficult to locate since it may be covered by a switchbox, electrical box or other component.
However, the year is not vital at all. Merc serials have to be compared against a production list since there is no "information" encoded in them.
If a dealer had a motor produced in 1992 that sat around for 5 years before it was sold, Merc would consider that a 1997 model, since they never changed during production. That's why you will never see a "last years model sale" at a Merc dealer like you do at other mfg's.
Also, regardless of the year, if you are looking to try and figure the value of the motor (alone or as part of the entire package), a used XR6 that is in cosmetically decent shape and running well will sell anywhere from the 1500 dollar range (earlier production/run in salt water) up to about the 3K mark (freshwater run/receipts to show service done and possibly a 6 month warranty).
If this is a private sale I would insist on at minimum a compression check. The XR6's were built using 2.0 litre blocks much more suited to 135 horses. The extra stress created by producing 150 usually results in a rebuild somewhere around the 8 to 10 year mark, assuming normal use - just keep that in mind when determining a fair price...."
