150 HP Merc Cracks top ring

" My 1977 Mercury 150 HP Inlin

" My 1977 Mercury 150 HP Inline 6 has now cracked two top rings. The top rings cracked in two original pistons, but so far not in the replaced pistons. Does too much ring groove clearance cause this? Please advise. "

cylinder must be reamed to remove ridge at topof cylinder when reringing engine.

" Thanks Mrpops, That is a possibility. I guess I had discounted that reason since I did not change the bearings, and the bores are so loose, since I have honed them 4-5 times, and only used standard rings/pistons. Obviously the answer is to bore and re-piston the engine, however this motor is in bad shape due to corrosion, I was just trying to get a little more use out of it for minimal cost, before I junk it. "
