"I have a 1985 Johnson 150hp outboard and need some help.. The motor is not responsive under load, like when trying to pull a skier out of water and usually need the fast idle up for it to stay running. I have replaced most fuel components including the VRO pump.. Does anybody have any suggestions on what to try next?? I was thinking a timing problem..."

"Oh, one more thing... When w

"Oh, one more thing... When we do get a skier up we have to prime the primer bulb and then with a little hesitation it does go, somewhat!"

"Assuming that you have proper

"Assuming that you have proper compression and spark on all cylinders (if you haven't checked these two areas, do so).

The need to pump the fuel primer bulb would indicate a problem with the fuel pump, however you've replaced that. This leaves two possible problems that result in hesitation.....

A sticking timer base under the flywheel resulting in retarded spark... OR... fouled carburetors.

Fouled carburetors are the most likely cause."

How many psi do the cylinders

How many psi do the cylinders on these usually run at? Spark is good on all. Would it be a good idea to pull the carbs off and give them a good bath? Do I need to pull the flywheel off to access the the timer base? Thanks!

"PSI is usually in the range o

"PSI is usually in the range or 100 psi and even on all cylinders. What readings do you get (all cylinders)?

Spark (with all spark plugs removed) should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame..... a real SNAP! Does it?

A sticking timer base can be observed as follows.

Engine NOT running. Spin prop while having someone put the engine into forward gear OR disconnect control cables from engine and shift it at the engine. Slowly advance throttle while observing the timer base. If it sticks at any point, that will be obvious."

"I will check fuel issue first

"I will check fuel issue first, Install a portable tank and bypass what you have, connect it directly to the engine and test , saves you time and money"

Copmression is good 95-100 psi

Copmression is good 95-100 psi on all 6 cylinders. Good fire as well.. I did notice that the rectifier is real soft and squishy and it is bubbled up and black where the wires go in.. Big problem??

"did u ck,the timer base,..wd4

"did u ck,the timer base,..wd40,wks wonders for it....are u using the oiling function of the VRO,if so...how did u go about repl it,..contrary,to popular belief,..it IS NOT,plug-n-play...cleaned carbs?...new wtr pump?..eng temp ok?...repl that volt reg, that is bubbling on you.
chg fuel filters,..ck'ed for wtr in fuel?...vent to tank ok?...anti-syphon valve present,if so,..repl w/straight thru fitting.spark test--jumps 7/16 gap,or better/on ALL?"
