Re: 150 evinrude

I'll give you a few numbers (from my area).

A rebuilt powerhead (straight swap) goes for about $2500 bucks (with a 6 month warranty).

If you go for the cheap fix, cleaning up the one cylinder with a new piston/rings can be done for under a grand.

But since you need to (crack the block), you may as well do it all while you are in there - 2K would get you new "guts" (pistons, rings, bearing, seals etc).

That still wouldn't address the cause of the bad piston (necessarily) which is often caused by a dirty/clogged carb, so you need to have the root cause fixed as well.

If you could do the work yourself, 1000 bucks would give you a "like new" motor.

Even if it cost you 3K to have everything done you have to compare that against the approx 16K for a new 150.

Yes, a new engine would be quieter and more fuel efficient, but the 13K savings (compared to new) is probably more than you will spend on gas in the next 15 years....

Re: 150 evinrude

There are a number of marine supply places that package a "rebuild kit" which generally sell in the 700 buck range.

They have pistons, rings, bearings, seals/gaskets - everything you need to replace the (guts).

Of course, you will still need the assistance of a machine shop to clean up (hone) or rebore the cylinders (usually charge about 50 bucks a hole - so count on 300 there) - they will advise if they need to bore and you order your kit according to their recommendation (20 or 30 over or whatever).

You can do an on-line search or check on Ebay (there are 2 or 3 Ebay stores that sell the complete kits).

Don't forget to add a factory service manual to your list of "must have's" - you could get by with a Seloc's, but the OMC manual is far superior if you are going to attempt a total rebuild.

I completely rebuilt my own V4/140 last year (pistons, rings, bearings, seals and gaskets), plus four carb kits, new thermostats, temp sensors, power pack and voltage regulator - cost were $650 in parts (shop around, prices vary sometimes quite substantially) and $200 at the machine shop.

(if I was charging for labour it would have been $1000 for the powerhead and $500 for the carbs (rebuild and resync), bringing the total to $2350 all in - just to show what you can potentially save doing it yourself)

Took a day to tear it all down, did the carbs while was I waiting for the block to come back from the shop, a day to put it back together and a day getting everything "resync'd"

Re: 150 evinrude

always,do carbs, water pump etc, during an overhaul,...that is part,of the overhaul...if u have a bad piston, chances are,u need a machine shop for boring/honing or other wk,...high speed timing,AFTER an overhaul, should be reduced, till after breakin...if boring out and going w/oversize pistons,a chg in hs jets are required.,yes u can fix just one,....would u tear ur car eng down, and not put new bearings,or fix 'just one' piston.....about 70% pizzing in the wind,to me....
