"89' boat, 90 or 91 model

"89' boat, 90 or 91 model motor. my question is im getting this boat from a friend, never been in it but have heard it start. sounds fine. is it safe for salt water. he says runs good and will run around 75? has a stainless prop {3} that was custom made for it. im still thinking of taking it to a mechanic to just have it serviced to be safe though. boat is a faded on top but thinking of having it redone for looks. are these good motors if running good? thanks in advance"

"John, if you are right about

"John, if you are right about the model year of the motor, I believe that will be the 2.0 litre block (or 121.9 cu in) which was built fairly decently.

You ask about "safe for salt water". Not sure what you are asking there. Can the motor be used in salt water? Yes, but extra care to keep it flushed and rinsed is in order.

However, you don't mention the legth of the boat. If you can get 75 mph out of it with a 150 motor, it sounds to be on the smaller side of things. If it is you may not want to venture too far offshore. Little boats and big water can be a dangerous combination - whether fresh or salt water...."

"Thanks Graham. The boat is either 16 or 17 feet long. Yes, I was wanting to make sure the motor would handle salt water fine. I appreciate it. The prop is cupped and stainless steel. He says it's around $700 to get that prop for that motor. Also, if the boat has metal flake and is badly faded, is there anything special to take into consideration about a paint job? I appreciate all of your help."

"There is a number of products

"There is a number of products on the market that will (somewhat) restore faded gel coat. Any marine store can help you out.

A good cleaning and buffing may well do the trick. However, if you do find any areas that are cracked or blistered they should be repaired.

A high quality, cupped stainless prop for your motor will usually retail in the 400 dollar range with alot of the aftermarket retailers selling for a hundred or so less. It sounds like the seller is trying inflate the value of the set-up.

The motor, even with the stainless prop would normally sell for about 1500 bucks in the used market (maybe a couple hundred more if it was "exceptional").

I would expect the book value on the boat, including trailer to be in the 2000-3000 range. That may sound low, but you are looking at a rig that is 19 model years old.

So while you haven't stated the asking price, that should give you something to think about..."

"John, I am highly sceptical that that boat will run 75MPH. I hope your heart is not set on that. I have a 16' low profile Avenger (1000 pounds with motor) with a 135HP V6 2.0 Liter Black Max. Althought I am still tuning it to run fast, I would think I will only get about 60 MPH out of it with a 23" pitch prop. 75MPH is usually in the range of slow racing boats, with multiple large block motors, and out of the range of amateurs.

BTW - When you wind that boat up, be very careful, if you hit a wave at high speed, you can easily flip."

"Is there any place on 1994 vintage mercury motor to find the serial #, if the one on the bracket has been removed? Like on the block, ect."

"Robert, every Merc has a wels

"Robert, every Merc has a welsh plug - silver disk the size of a quarter somewhere on the waterjacket of the powerhead that has a serial.

Often times, on the larger motors, it can be found on the right hand side, if you are behind the motor, hidden underneath the switchbox.

Here's a pic (of a little motor) to show you what you are looking for...

"thanks for everyones advise and help, i have decided to back out of our deal we had because i found out that he was trying to pull one on me some friend huh? someone that grew up with him said he has cheated many people with diffrent things including himself, so i guess i may just try and buy a good used 150 motor and find the right boat for it any thoughts of how much a good used 150 2 stroke would run for or a 4? i will be salt and freshwater fishing
thanks for the help everyone"

"John, personally I would look

"John, personally I would look for the boat first. It's probably alot easier to match an engine to a boat than the other way around.

Regardless of what type of water you are running, since you are looking at a used motor, I would stick with a 2 stroke. Too much to go wrong with a 4, and in the used market you could really be picking up nothing more than a collection of parts.

A used 90 thru 150 horse often times will sell in the 1000-1500 dollar range for a "90-something" model. You may be a little surprised to see that 9.9-15 horse models sell for about the same - but that is just the market..."
