15 Hp OB Fuel Problem

Big Mac

:mad:I have a 1994 15 hp outboard that ran great one day, when I took it back out a few weeks later it wouldn't start. Compression is fine, spark is fine. When I manually shoot fuel in the carb it runs fine, so it sounded like a fuel problem to me. I replaced the fuel pump, both fittings on the fuel line (tank and motor), removed and cleaned the carb. After all this it still won't run unless I shoot fuel in the carb. I pulled the fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb and when I pump the ball it shoots fuel. What am I missing on this????:confused:

Check the operation of the choke , operate it by manually closing the flapper if you like. ---------PS , the fuel pump has nothing to do with starting of the motor.-----------That function is done by the manual fuel pump in the hose ( primer bulb )

good advice, I did a compression check and I hae 90 lbs in both cylnders. I had the motor running by shooting gas in the cab from a spray bottle, I removed the fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb and it wasn't puming any gas. I've already put a new fuel pump on hoping that would fix the problem. but it didn't. What else could I be missing? Could the new fuel pump be bad?

The fuel pump has nothing to do with the motor starting !!--------It is on standby until the motor starts and then it maintains the fuel supply in the carburetor.-----------Remove the fuel pump , pull the motor over and check to see if there are pressure pulses on the hole in the middle where it mounts.------------A broken reed valve may be the culprit here.

Roger that. I did what you said and there no pressure pulse from the motor to where the fuel pump mounts at. thanks for the advice.

But would the engine run when squirting fuel into the carb with a broken reed-valve??
Remove the carb drain plug and pump the primer.
Is fuel coming out??
If not, you have a sticking float valve or wrongly adjusted float.
If yes, remove the top carb cover and check all passages and cover for cracks.
