"I have an older 15hp evinrude

"I have an older 15hp evinrude (not sure of the year),serial #10024b-08671. It's giving me starting problems, but when it does start it seems to run fine on high idle and when put on low idle the engine starts knocking and rattling really hard and eventually it shuts down. I took out the carburator and cleaned it out. The carburator has two control knobs that reach out from the front of the motor. One for gas and one for air mixture, I'm not sure where they should be set. Could someone tell me if this sounds like a serious problem, because of the hard knocking sound, or a simple problem with the gas and air mixture?"

"The model number of 10024B idicates that the engine is a 1962 10hp Evinrude.

Hard knocking noise..... do the following test.

(Piston Play Check)
(J. Reeves)

This procedure will tell you if there is any wear or play in the Wrist Pin, Wrist Pin Bearing, or Connecting Rod to Crankshaft area.

Remove the spark plugs. Insert a screwdriver, dowel, punch, or some object of your choice through the s/plug hole and into the cylinder/piston area. Hold the tool lightly against the top of the piston. Turn the flywheel by hand, bringing the piston up to top dead center, then continue turning the flywheel to pull the piston down about a inch..... all the while holding the tool lightly against the piston top.

Now, at the point whereas the piston has been dropped down about a inch, grab the flywheel and hold it firmly. Now, push that tool solidly and firmly against the piston top.

If the piston moves without moving the flywheel, there is a problem (wear, play, clearance, etc) somewhere with the items mention in the first sentence. Be sure to check all of the pistons/cylinders.

(Carburetor Adjustments - Two Adjustable N/Vs)
(J. Reeves)

Initial settings are: Bottom high speed = seat gently, then open 1 turn out. Top slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Setting the high and low needle valves properly:

NOTE: For engines that DO NOT have a shift selection, obviously there is no NEUTRAL position. Simply lower the rpms to the lowest setting to obtain the low speed needle valve adjustment.

(High Speed) Start engine (it will run pretty rough), shift into forward gear, take up to full throttle. In segments of 1/8 turn, waiting for the engine to respond between turns, start turning in the bottom high speed needle valve. You'll reach a point whereas the engine will either start to die out or spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the needle valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest setting.

(Low Speed) Slow the engine down to where it just stays running. Shift into neutral. Again in segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the top needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back. Again, at that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustments, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Wow I didn't think it was that old, but I'm surprised it still turns on. Looks pretty new though. The person that sold it to me said it hadn't been used much.
The settings on the carborator only make one full turn, at the top it says LEAN "SLOW" then at the end of the turn it says RICH "SPEED". Where should they be set? Thanks"

"I've already said where t

"I've already said where they should be set.

They only make one turn because there is a stop they're hitting. Study that setup and remove the stops, loosen the knobs and back them out slightly then retighten the set screw, whatever needs to be done to adjust those needle valves properly.

BUT..... Before going to that procedure, do the piston play test first."

"I'll do the test tomorrow

"I'll do the test tomorrow and let you know the results, and I'll also check out the carburator. thank you for your response I'ts been great help. On your firt response you noted motors with no neutral on the shift setting, but this one has neutral, reverse and foward can their be a mistake with the serial # I have to say it looks in really good shape to be a 62. Or they took great care of it. thank you once again.
