Hello, I am wondering what the slow speed adjustment knob on the side of this engine does? It is not connected to the carb from what I can see. It is behind the fuel line connection but only turns about an eight of an inch. I believe it may have been goofed up by the previous owner. Can anyone explain this?

It is the idle speed / stop adjustment.----Allows and owner to automatically adjust to a favorite trolling speed.---Correct it is not connected to the carburetor.----Perhaps more than one owner was confused by it or it was never used at all.

So it does nothing the way I see it, as it turns a flat sided shaft over which is a small plate that keeps it from advancing either way.

Typically they get broken when the operator forces it too far. The clip groove breaks. What I do instead of buying a new one, is carefully cut the body so it can enter the lower cowling farther, then carefully cut a new groove, just right next to the original broken groove. Done this countless times. By doing this you can create a wider distance between the groove and the broken area. (Correcting an OMC design miscalculation) Use a high quality lube when you reassemble it.....including the threaded bar that moves in and out to provide the throttle stop.

Mickey----The plate keeps the shaft from turning.-----That is what allows that shaft to move towards that vertical arm / shaft to adjust the idle speed.-----Take a look at it to see how that simple unit works !
