I have an old boat with an Evinrude 140 that is about 1979. Last time I had it out it started but ran very rough. It felt like it was in bad need of a tune up. (Felt like not all of the cylinders were firing.) It stopped after about 1 minute and would never start again. The starter motor was working just fine. The engine was turning it just wasn't turning over.

Several guys at the boat dock were speculating the the power pack had failed. Is this a reasonable explanation?

Can a novice replace one without getting into too much trouble?

If want to sell I need a moto

If want to sell I need a motor to fix for my boat

" Do a compression test first. And check the spark to each plug(must jump a gap of 7/16")I believe the 79 model had 2 power packs. Changing one is 2 screws and plug in connecters,no big deal if that is the problem. "

Thanks Sparky.

The motor only has one. Rectangular box at very top back of motor. Maybe it is a 77. There is no obvious markings on it to indicate which it is. Is there a way to determine which year it is?

I took out a spark plug and touched it to the motor and saw no spark at all.

Is the compression test easy?

Thanks

compresson test is a must do.

compresson test is a must do. Go to a shop and have them do it for you.You can disconnect the black/yellow stripe wire at the power pack and check for spark again.
