"Overheated, replaced all cooling gaskets seals, inpeller, milled head (so saying I have a considerable personal time investment here, as many of you do).
Put together head on older 125b, and unfortunately bumped the timing belt which caused it to jump a few teeth (not sure how many, that's why I'm here). I am able to find the marks/alignment on the crankshaft and accessory pullies, but Seloc Manual says the the Valve cover has the mark on it as well to get everything in line. My valve cover has none (pulley does have a dot, just nothing on valve cover to align the dot with). I guessed at top position, put everything back together and engine runs but very rough at idle which it didn't before, guessing that it is the timing belt off a notch or two. Also now tops out at 3500 when used to go up to 5k at WOT. Am planning on doing the Pertronix thing as well, but don't want to mess it all up with timing belt being off.

Please Help if you can, or have a picture of where the dot lines up on top."

"Yes, that is what the Seloc Manual says as well. Unfortunately I didn't buy this boat new, looks like someone before me did some work/painting etc on it, now no mark that I can find. Thinking about stripping the paint from it to see if it is under the paint, but was hoping someone had a 125b and could let me know the location and or picture on theirs so I could save some time."

What caused over heating?

"I actually already scraped the paint off of the front lip...nothing

Think overheating started with impeller coming apart (idling out from dock heard noise that kinda sounded like a siren for a minute, then it stopped, then it overheated very quickly..steam, boiling of coolant, even the rubber exhaust hose from the manifold to the drive came loose from the heat). After replacing the impeller and cleaning the tubes of the broken fins, cleaning out the heat exchanger and new gaskets/seals had coolant leak from between the center two cylinders..pulled head machine shop said was slightly off, but had them mill it since it was already off, pressure test was good as were the valves.

Now back together and want to salvage what is left of the summer with the kids (has been down since end of June)."

"Bummer. I don't know of any alternative method of aligning the belt to the cam but here is what I do know. At top dead center, the exhaust and inlet valves will be fully closed. Perhaps you could pull the cover and attempt the alignment that way. Otherwise, one might expect to get some help when the other members come back from fishing. We are all coming and going I expect. I leave tomorrow night (spearfishing). Sounds like you are close--good luck."

one other way to find the mark

one other way to find the mark is if you can find a dealer or resaler in your area that has a new valve cover in stock take yours with you and compare the two and then make a mark on yours..

Just for sh*ts and grins I

Just for sh*ts and grins I measured the mark on an AQ140. The distance between cap nut centers is 3 7/16. The distance of the mark from the starboard cap nut is 1 5/8. That last one was kinda difficult with parallax so take with a grain of salt.

"Take a look at it this way......
Look at the cam.
The cam lobes should be facing away from each other on #1 pretty square away from each other. The biggest part of the lobes should be about equal so the valves are shut on #1.
If you can't figure it out that way, go to your local junk yard and get a valve cover from an auto. They are marked the same."

"Thanks Dennis, Bill & Eri

"Thanks Dennis, Bill & Eric, no local Volvo Penta Dealers here in Central Cal, so will see if setting the mark 1 5/8 from starboard cap nut (am assuming valve cover on both 140 & 125 are the same) and verify that cam is closed on intake and exhaust #1. See what happens if not will go to local Pick-A-Part and pull a valve cover from an auto, guessing a 240-244 (B23) is the same?

You guys are great and I appreciate the assistance you provide...hope the fishing is rewarding."

"I have a 1975 Bayliner with an AQ130C 4 cyl motor. I have had problems with overheating and have overhauled the water pump. This unit has the sea water strainer. Everything was working fine last Friday and the temp never went over 110 degrees at 4200 RPM. But when I checked the oil later I saw that there has been water mixing with the oil and now I have a serious mess. I think the water entered where the pump bolts up to the block. Also , when I hooked up the muffs to run the motor, it went up to 140 and was climbing so I shut it down. Does the entire lower unit have to be submerged? It is a Penta 270. I do not like the design of the cooling system and was wondering if I can bypass the water pump with a positive displacement 12 volt electric pump. Any ideas and comments would be appreciated."

go for a 79 to 82 volvo 240. Sedn or wagon. Inline four. It has the same valve cover. There is a notch on the cover. You will see it!!!!
