"I have a 120hp Johnson 90degree V4 Looper about 1988. It starts easy when cold, runs great but when I shut it down it wont start up again. If I wait about half hour then it starts up again and runs fine again. The VRO has been disconnected and I run a 50:1 premix. Any suggestions?"

"Look at the stator under the flywheel. That stator is the beginning of the charging system and also the ignition system.

Should the stator start to fail, it will usually provide the necessary power to the powerpack(s) to engage the ignition. However, when hot, a voltage drop occurrs resulting in weak or non existent ignition (spark).

Usually when the stator starts to fail, the above is true, and if so there is usually a sticky substance dripping down on the timer base and powerhead area. Worth looking at.

Also, should the ignition switch be failing, having an intermitent short, that could bring about that problem. To check the switch, simply remove the black/yellow (kill circuit) from the back of the switch. Note that it will be impossible to kill the engine by turning off the switch with that wire removed."
