120 HP intermittently stalls

"My 1975 4 cyl.Mercruiser 120 HP engine runs good all day starting and stopping while fishing but suddenly looses power when I full trottle it to return on 3/4 tank. It seems to starve for gas as the motor trys to rev and will die , but will restart and run at an idle. I can trottle up again and sometimes it will run ok , but will always run at low speed.
I changed the paper filter in the fuel pump and cleaned the small filter in the carb, but it still has this problem. I have a new polyethylene tank installed last year.
The fuel pump and carb are originals 32 years old."

I'd start with the basic tuneup and the stove pipe choke; clean out the pipe passages in the intake. A new fuel pump and carb filter would do it wonders; pump is long overdue since it will quit on you 10 miles out.

Still not great; rebuild the carb or just replace it with a reman due to the wear on the bushings, etc. Davey Jones' locker is calling your carb and pump home."
