Spent about $1800. @ shop and still runs terribly. The shop rebuilt carbs(4) replaced fuel/oil pump and tuned up. It starts and idles, runs full out then suddenly does not idle and uses fuel like it's 5 cents a gallon. when it goes south it seems all cylinder are affected. The shop said they can't figure this out and I'm needing some help, does this sound like Ignition issues?

start by checking compression and make sure spark will jump 7/16 inch with a good crack with a gap tester..always start on a problem with these two tests..

then your decision is whether its a fuel or fire problem... i use an inductive timing light at this point to try to decide..

all three of these tools will cost you about the same as an hours labor and are damn near a necessity if you are going to own a boat...

the compression of all four cylinders are good and the spark is steadily clearing the 7/16 gap. the repair shop completely rebuilt carbs and I was on the lake and all was good for maybe 1 hour then it went south, I've worked on cars for some 45 years but never outboards and I think it's something that makes the timing retard drastically and fall on it's face, and now it's electronic this and that and I'm not sure where to start to be going in the right direction. thank you for helping me, Dave
