"i hve aquired a 1970, 115 mercury. i was told that you could start an outboard without the ignition switch conected to the motor (i did not get the ignition switch and and the electric lines that connect to side of motor with that big electric plug) so i am wondering if i need that plug or if i have an electrical problem."

"Ed, You really need to get a boat wiring harness for that motor. You could start it with jumper cables, but you risk damage to the switchbox and rectifier if you try it and mess it up."

"Hi Ed, you can usually find these on ebay, make sure if you are getting one that you get the right plug type, seven pin,look at the socket on the engine cowl,also if buying used, do a continuity test as these type of harness are prone to breaking wires at the plug because of the sharp bend when trailering the engine,"
