115 lower unit oil leak

I replaced the shaft seal due to fishing line damage with a kit I ordered online. Ran the motor and noticed that new oil was leaking from the inside of the lower unit. I pulled the bottom gear case( excuse my terminology) where the prop shaft is, and it looks like the o-ring that seals the gear housing is where the oil is coming from. Should I buy "another kit" and try again or have I made a rookie mistake and not put the assymbly back together correctly? I am concerned possibly that the thrust bearing might be in backwards. Is this possible? The unit bolted up good and tight so I'm a little confused. Can you help?

Make sure the inside of the housing where the o ring contacts is smooth and clean. You may have gotten debris on the o ring. If the o ring is not damaged...Lube the o ring with gear lube and try again. If the lube is coming out the exhaust, it is probably the o ring. If it is coming out the water intake, it is probably one of the seals under the water pump.

As for your question on the thrust bearing...I am assuming you are referring to the two piece bearing in front of the reverse gear...I do not recall that bearing having a specific orientation.

Thanks for getting back to me. I did check for debris and did not find any at all. After some closer investigating it looks like the o-ring is not the correct thickness. The o-ring doesnt come past the outside of the groove. I checked it with the straight edge of my micrometer and there is definate day light between the o-ring and the outside diameter of the groove. Possibly the kit I purchased is for a different year model. I have heard that this is possible. I'm thinking about trying another o-ring with a larger thickness. Is there any harm in this that you know of?

Since you purchased a "kit", I assume it is an aftermarket part. Honda does not make a kit. They sell the individual parts.

I would just order the correct o ring from boats.net to make sure it is correct. The gearcase is too expensive to be guessing on correct o rings. Only costs about $6.

Look it up by serial number to get the correct part.

Keep in mind...Honda has two versions of the 115. A 115A which was made since early 2000's and the 115D which was just recently introduced and replace the 115A. They do have different gear cases.

OK also keep in mind that Sierra or Mallory they have terrific warranties Back there product well. everyone can make a packaging mistake. Also from my point of view on OEM and After-market when it comes to buying part --not-- at a dealer after-market has a usable warranty often the OEM requirements for a warranty claim if there is one you will need to bring it to a dealer and have it DG'ed at your expense. Please keep in mind that this observation is from the million of parts we move in a year compared to the calls we get from a cust with a miss packaged or defective part.

Also Please since this site is free, Recommend and Purchase all avalible parts from Marineengine.com First.
