Im having trouble turning the crank when I bolt up the transfer port covers. I'm only using loctite form-a-gasket. Am I losing clearance
by not using a gasket and putting pressure on the cylinder wall. As soon as I take it off it turns nicely again. I suppose I could blue the inside of the t.p. cover. Any feed back would be appreciated.

An inline 6 should " jam " with tightening of transfer port covers.-------------------Time to post some pictures so we can see what you are doing.------------You should always use gaskets ----------Not----------" form a gasket " !!!!!----------------------What did you use for a sealer on the crankcase " half joint " ---????

I used a cork gasket in the gasket groove and smeared a little loctite on the cork just because. photo (15).jpgphoto (14).jpgIn the close up shot of the cover you might be able to see the shiny portion where its contacting the meat in the middle of the port. I decided to omit the gasket since there are no machined faces or bearing clearances to set here. I talked to
a boat shop in the area and he has never heard of such an issue either. well, its there. and it also cracked the aluminum on the #5
cylinder. The plan is to v out the crack and epoxy it.

racerone. are you saying "jamming is to be expected with or without a .020" or .030" gasket? Or whatever thickness it may be. I did not tear the
engine down. It was in pieces when I got the boat.

While you have it apart, are your drain restricters in place? Small plastic plugs with a small hole in them.Five of them in your case

yup. the seloc manual I purchased said make sure you have them. I was missing the one on #5 coincidentally. Theres been alot of trouble with that #.
A local mechanic said I wouldn't experiance much without one. He said it would take 2-3 before she will have a rough idle. Does that sound right?
I'm fairly green to boating. A guy said these are good motors while another mechanic said they're crap. Which is it? Anything else to watch for?

I drill and tap those holes for an 8-32 thread.-----------Use 8-32 stainless set screws with a wee hole in them.--------------Never worry about bleed inserts going missing again.----------Sounds like you might have gotton the wrong covers with the mess of parts in the boxes.

nope. only tp covers there. just needed a gasket to increase the clearance. I wonder if that bleed insert/drain restrictor caused #5 to fail.

Nope it would just affected the idle a little, and drill the hole 1mm/.060th. As for the motor good or bad,I don't know, like anything, one man's rubbish is another man's treasure
