Hi there... I have a question about making 1 out of 2

I have a 1985 115 Johnson model # CJ115TLCOS. A piston top disintegrated on this thing last year and it has been sitting since. The cyl wall is scored but fixable. The combustion chamber is good. The bottom drive is good.

I have come across a 1979 Johnson 115 that supposedly has a newer top end, but the bottom drive is junk. They want $500 for it. So the question is...will the older bottom end bolt on to my newer top end. Could there be a problem with shafts or splines or.....?

Let me know what you think.

Thanks
Gary

The way I tell is go to a site that sells rebuilt LU's, like SouthwestMarine.com, and look up both, and see if they sell the same unit for both.

Crank shaft the same, although superseded in part numbers.
Splines should be the same.
Use the BRP parts site, pick the critical parts like crank, gasket PH-Exhaust.
Use the search function for parts on this site.
Superseded part numbers interchange old part.

I think you're asking if the good powerhead from the 79 bolt on your 1985 115 midsection. Yes, it will. The basic difference between the two is your 115 has a bubble back exhaust and the 79 exhaust plates are flat. If you plan on using the ignition ffrom the 1985 there may be some bosses missing on the 1979 block but nothing you can't overcome. Just make sure it really is a 1979.

Thanks guys, still debating on what I'm going to do with this thing.

Guess I gotta get the ser# off of the '79 and check it out to see if it really IS a '79. Then do a comp test on it.

Thanks
