Does my 91 115 evinrude have an alternator. Ive checked it with a amp probe but nothing. If it has one i need to fix it if not i guess i need to keep charging the battery.

"You have a stator which feeds a rectifier which charges the battery. The most common reason for the charging system not to work is the rectifier. The rectifier may be part of a regulator, I can't remember if you motor has one or not. Testing procedures are given in your manual."

look on the starboard side of the motor..if you have a rectifier only system it will be mounted on the block close to a terminal block...if its a regulator system it will be mounted on top of the block partially behind the flywheel...the rectifier is a round one about the size of a quarter or a little bigger...if its a rectifier only charging system then you do not need it working to run...its sole purpose is to charge battery and send a signal to the tach....if there is nothing else connected to the battery you can get many starts out of it with a fully charged battery..that rectifier only system from evinrude johnson is designed for a smaller battery than most of us put in a boat today...do not use a gel or a sealed battery on it after you replace the rectifier...a top of the line auto-zone battery will eventually blow it....just a bad design.....i have heard that you can get a radio shack rectifier that is better and for half the price but have never used one...

My tach is not working will that affect it? I bought a rectifier for radio shack already just been out of town so i havent had a chance to have a look at it.

yes.....please let me know if

yes.....please let me know if that radio shack rectifier works and if so please post the part number if you still have it....when you replace the rectifier there is a grey wire on one of the terminals..that is the tach feed...also please post your meter reading after the battery is charged and the motor has run 3500 rpm or faster for a bit...what battery are you using?

optima batteries are what im using. When i get home i will install everthing and will post the part numbers.

"I was the one who originaly posted the genereric Radioshack rectifier.
Here is a picture of one of mine.
This engine was just a hobby project that I got for a hundred bucks.
The center piston was in a thousand pieces!
I was able to sort through a pile of used parts and engines at a friends place who has done marine stuff for years.
Come home with a whole truck load of stuff to pick through and scavenge.
This engine now has a mid seventies block with pistons from all different years, mid eighties crank and the original head.
I of course had the micrometers and verniers on every part before I used them and even the rings are used!
I spent less than another $100 on gaskets and seals and of course this rectifier.
This engine has been just purring now for over 20 hours of pushing a heavy fishing boat.
I just went out tonite in the dark to take a picture of this if it will help you folks out
