"Hi Jimmy,

your serial number is listed as a 1966 model according to Brunswick Marine's official document and 1965 according to the oldmercs.com site linked below. If I'm not mistaken, the rewind starter spring for your engine is part # 24-29340T02:
http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=MER24-29340T02&ptype= &Engine=&Model=

Good parts lookup diagrams are also available, for example, here:
http://www.crowleymarine.com/parts.cfm
or here: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectSerailRange.asp?doc_nbr=110

Some basic info and spare parts at this vendor's site:

Hope this helps. BTW, looks like a cool retro engine!

If you have an ohm meter I can give you specs and what to check... Swapping parts is a quick way to lighten your wallet and still end up with no spark...

"Jimmy, since this model has the old Phelon ignition, there is only a couple of tests you can do.

**Ensure your points are "open" when testing the coil***

With your ohm meter set at R x 1

Put the positive probe on the coil lead (should be the black/white wire) and the negative lead on the coil ground - you are looking for a reading of between .81 and 1.09 ohms

Then change meter to R x 100 and put positive lead on the Spark Plug Terminal and the negative on the coil ground - should get a reading of between 4.25 - 5.75 ohms

If both of those test out your coil is ok and your spark plug leads. And this would indicate that your problem is most likely with the condenser or the points..."
