" Hey guys,
I've got a 110 Johnson VRO, late 80's model. It started losing power while running two weeks back. Sometimes it would shut off from full throttle, sometimes it was almost impossible to get in gear as it would shut off as soon as it idled down. We immediately assumed water in the gas, pulled off the inline separator, and sure enough it was full, very little gas. We replaced it, drained the carbs and emptied the other inline fuel filter. Boat ran great for a day. Now it's back to the same old tricks. Now we've noticed that the water separator is becoming empty...you'll be running along and the boat will die down...you can check the water separator and it will only be half full of gas, half air. We replaced the bulb and line from the separator to the tank in the meantime and the new bulb started going flat(Wal-Mart special, ie, not too special). Man at the marina suggested we replace the line going to the tank. He said it was probably getting soft and collapsing. We pulled a new one in as we pulled the old one out. Old one, eight years old, was in terrible shape, great big bubbles all along the exterior in places. Hooked it back up, replaced the Wal-Mart bulb with the original that seemed fine and hit the water. Same problem. Only thing not new between the tank and the engine is the Water Separator housing and the bulb at this point. All the hose has been replaced as well as the connection at the engine. Water separator is still losing gas. The tank is only eight years old and does not have a filter inside of it, just a pickup tube. I've taken a tire pump and sent air backwards through this line and it seems to be clear. You can hear the bubbling in the tank. I've checked the vent...all clear. Only odd thing I've noticed is that the former owner put the inline fuel filter on backwards. When you open it, it looks clean, but really the trash is collecting on the inside. I've cleaned it out thoroughly and replaced it the same way for the time being(don't want to risk flushing trash back into the carbs). This didn't seem to help. I'm going to replace it but I don't really think it's causing me any problems. Right now I'm of the mind set that it is either getting air between the water separator and the tank or that there is a blockage in the pickup tube? Am I on the right path here? Please help. Sorry this was a novel. "
