Had this motor a number of years now and is a secondary motor now.Question is upon trying to shift from forward to neutral and or from reverse to neutral it seems(like happened tonight) I have to give it an extra little bump on the shifter handle to get it into neutral sometime.Could it be I just have the rpms dropped down alittle too low and that is why it wont come out of gear?Should I pull the lower unit and check the shift shaft height adjustment?

ok.Thanks.It may be since I may not shift it at the slowest of the idle speed.Have to check that out. Also, when I was checking things here at home with it not running I put it in reverse and then neutral I jiggle the prop alittle and then it comes out of reverse.Guess the dogs are ever so slightly engaged.Would this be normal with an engine that is not running?I did watch a good video on you tube where a outboard mechanic was doing a rebuild on one of these and after installing shift rod he turned it all the way in then backed it out one turn to get a 27/64th distance to top of brass block to the lower unit mating surface.Someone else said just turn it all the way in?I did have this unit off two times, once to to pull the power head and once for a water pump impellar.Don,t think I turned the shift rod at all by accident, but someone else had been in there at some point in the past due to a stripped brass block threads so who knows where the adjustment is?I guess this adjustment is done in neutral??

You turn the rod all the way in and back it out if needed to make the bend face forward.----No distance to measure on those !!-----It should take zero effort to shift out of reverse with motor not running.------I am thinking you need to take lower unit off and see if motor linkages are binding.----Or if lower unit needs to come apart for inspection !
