How to change the impeller? No window port access on this one. Does shifter handle need to be taken out to release gearcase? Thanks for reading.
 
You need to be specific with motor designations , I thought the fisherman was a 5.5 / 6 HP model designation.-------Is this the 9.5 HP ??-------Perhaps you drop the lower unit down after taking out the 4 bolts.-------Then the shift rod connecter is visible.---You must remove one of the bolts there to release the shift rod.

Yes you are crrect my apologies. It is a 1962 5.5hp. Serial#5524R. case don't drop far enough to access on this one. Maybe I must force it off? Doesn't feel right, feels hinged at the top for sure.There are no visible couplers on the shift shaft although case drops only 3/4 to 1 inch total and is hardly visible.
 
No problem ----That 5.5 needs the powerhead taken off the undo 2 nuts at the top of the shift riod.--Not that hard to do.
 
This is a 50 year old motor that likely runs better than some of the new plastic junk sold today.-----Nothing wrong with the design or the people that engineered / built that fine motor.-------Good opportunity to inspect / maintain the seal that is found under the powerhead as well.
