100HP merc carrier bearing

installed new carrier bearing and when i turn the prop in neutral it spins fine, and when i put it in gear it turns the proper way although it clicks and will not turn in reverse. When i put the motor in reverse it will not turn either way. Is there a certain way that the gear has to be in and how can you tell the proper way to install it

When you have it in neutral you should be able to spin the prop either clockwise or counter-clockwise without any resistance or noise.

In reverse it should stop dead if you turn clockwise and "click" counter-clockwise.

In forward the reverse (so click clockwise, stop dead counter).

That is NORMAL for the clutch system on a Merc.

If you are say, with the unit still NOT installed, that it won't turn either way in reverse, you have slipped something in the shift selector (the mechanism at the bottom of the shift shaft, in the front of the gear case).
