Hi there

I am having a little trouble getting my outboard to start first time, once running for a couple of minutes it starts absolutely fine.
Although initially after turning over for a few minutes it eventually coughs into starting with what you could say is an unusual amount of white smoke and then runs fine without the excessive smoke.

The plugs are relatively new & I recently checked the plugs & they seem fine.
Could you possibly recommend me other trouble shooting methods to try and rectify this problem.

Would a compression test be any use, anything to do with the fuel pump, what about carbs flooding?
Starter motor works fine solenoid works fine & generally the engine is in very good condition considering its age due to very little use.

Would greatly appreciate your help.
Cheers,
Craig

What year and SN? How long do you hold the key in before cranking a cold engine? I hold my 115 HP 2+2 for a count of 10...it fires right now. I also squeeze the primer bulb until it is tight then 2-3 more squeezes.

I'm not sure of the serial number although I'm quite sure of it being 1989-1990.
Also I usualy hold in the key for about 10-15 seconds but that seems to only make a small bit of difference, the primer bulb is always solid after cranking for a short while i squeeze the primer bulb once or twice more to stiffen it back up as fuel has been pulled through i would assume.

Do you hear the enricher solenoid clicking when you push in the key ??------------The enricher system must be energized while cranking and holding the key in while not cranking does very little to make a motor start quickly.

Yes the solenoid works fine and never misses a beat. You are refering to the solenoid that has an incoming supply from the battery through to the starter motor? That solenoid works perfectly.

Thanks
Craig.

That is the issue even after holding in the key for 10-15 seconds with the solenoid click occuring it still has difficulty starting?#

One thing to maybe mention is that the engine tends to want to start up more after turning the key after holding for period of time and then switching back off and quickly switching back on.
Could this indicate what might be the problem?

The key must be held in while cranking in order for the enricher to work !

I'll give it a go and let you know how it goes.
Although that is what I have been doing all along and the issue still existed I though it may have been fuel starvation or some other issue.

Starter motors on these are easily damaged by too much cranking.-----A motor that does not spin over quickly will have issues with spark !---Are you opening throttle while cranking ??

The throttle is open when I attempt to start, I still have the same issue with getting the engine initially running.
the enricher solenoid works absolutely fine although the engine does still not immediately fire up. I just replaced the plugs and leads also. Just a thought as I've had an issue with the fuel line connectors, would it be a more reliable connection to change over to the bayonet connection?

Many Thanks.
