10 hp johnson

Your probably right, but I only go a couple degrees. Run 91 or 92 octane, with 64 to 1 Amsoil Saber air cooled smokeless oil. This is about 13 a qt my cost, where regular 100 to 1 pre mix is about 11 a qt. Saber works very well for me on the water cooled motors. I run my Stihl 880 magnum saw at 64:1 also. Its 124 cc big and bad. Sells new with the 32" bar and .404 full chisel chain for just under 3000 bucks. Had it 8 years now and it loves the "snake oil". Sell firewood in the winter and wreck Outboards the rest of the time.

Example. Everyone knows that the Chev V8 engines are set at one turn valve lash at the factory. Since 1954, all manuals want 1 turn lash on hydraulic lifters. In 1973 when I rebuilt my first of almost 100 Chev V8's, I was told by a young machinist to set valves no more than 1/2 turn lash. I have NEVER had a lobe go flat, or burned an exhaust valve. Now almost everyone runs 3/8 to 1/2 lash on these engines. Yet the manuals and GM engineers still want 1 turn.

No but between some models, I have made some mods. The old 33 hp Speedi fours could be modified with head shaving and megaphone exhaust. Tuners would work too, even better but they proved too heavy for the exhaust port holes. Then the Big Four lower unit was modified to fit the Speedi four exhaust housing. I ran a witches brew of alcohol fuel and I guessed it turned out nearly 50 hp and was lite enough for a small hydroplane. Hope I can find some pictures of it for you. Finally ruined the crankshaft. I was around 20 years old. 1975
