    First off, thanks for your patience. The offset is facing back. Here is a photo with the shift rod and shifter in neutral, without the connector.

    Shift rod height for similar era motors seems to be 20 29/32, but that is too short for the offset to fully clear the bottom of the case. Anybody have the spec for this particular motor?
