Honda 225 jerking and choppy while trimming down

I recently had my trim pump replaced and now the engine is choppy/ jerky going down and making a squealing noise.
My mechanic said there is air in the system causing this and needs to be bled. Does this sound like it’s the probable culprit or is there anything else I can check before I have to pull the boat and trailer it a good distance away.

Well, as I read your post and before I got to what your mechanic told you I was already thinking "probably air".

Those trim units can be very stubborn about getting all the air bled out after being repaired.
So, I would have to agree with him.

I originally took the boat to the mechanic because the engine started making a screeching noise on the way down and extremely slow going up. I checked the hydraulic fluid which was full and on the way to bring the boat via water to mechanic, the engine would not trim up or down.
No noise , no nothing. When I got to the ramp we had to manually lift the engine for trailering. Mechanic eventually said it was the motor 🤷‍♂️
 
You’ll need the same type oil/fluid the mechanic used to bleed the system, it’s easy to do. I use a long necked oil squirt can and my 1999 Honda calls for the pink power steering fluid, I used a GM spec available just about anywhere.

Cycle the engine all the way up, remove fill screw, squirt fluid in the screw hole until it starts to overflow. Replace screw, cycle engine up and down a few times, cycle up all the way again, remove fill screw and top off again. Repeat process until you are satisfied the trim is working correctly.

Same type ,but not it obviously doesn’t matter the brand right?
 
My 1999 owners manual specifies the fluid, I don’t worry about the brand. I use the same stuff in my 1963 Pontiac power steering. It’s not a high stress usage.
