1998 Johnson Fast Strike 115 water temp alarm

Took the boat out for a few hours this afternoon scouting for a few spots to hit this weekend. Run all over the lake with no problems but as I was idling thru the no wake zone at the landing the water temp alarm started going off. I immediately shut it off and coasted to the hill. When I cranked it back up after I had the trailer backed in the alarm went off again for about ten seconds then stopped. I looked and it was peeing as hard as it ever did at idle. Does anyone have any experience with this issue? This is my first motor with these alarms and I don't know where to start. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Guy I bought it from said he replaced it two years ago. Now if that's true or not, who knows. Seemed to have a good stream of water coming from it or does that not really matter?

I did take the cowl off after I had it on the trailer and the powerhead where the plugs screw in were hot. Not super hot to where you couldn't touch it but both sides were pretty warm

If you can hold your hand on the cylinder head for a six second count without burning your fingers it's okay,Also place hand in the telltale stream, should be able to keep hand in it indefinitely! You can purchase a infrared thermometer 20$ and check temps. keep us posted:rolleyes:

I need a new water pump and t stats. The stats that were in there were gutted out for some reason and full of sand. Not sure why they were gutted in the first place but gonna go ahead and put new ones in. Buddy of mine told me to take the plastic pieces that are left of the stats out and run for a little while to make sure all of the sand is flushed out. Will this cause further problems or will it be ok to run without them for a little while? Wish I could figure out how to upload pictures on here to show yall what it looked like.

You stated that the hot alarm sounded for about 10 seconds.
Just so you know, with the Systems Check warning system, THAT IS NORMAL BEHAVIOR.

On any alarm, the horn sounds for 10 seconds, and the associated light lights up.

drop lower unit, Reverse Flush engine thoroughly thru water tube, down thru t-stat openings ETC. Salt away can be used in a barrel or large tank with lower unit reinstalled with new waterpump. A light film of sealer can be used on both sides of gasket, plate, and housing, Clean surface of mount for waterpump thoroughly before installing impeller & housing. A coating of dish soap helps installation of impeller into housing.

I did not know that. The light also went off when the horn stopped, is that normal also?

Thank you.

But that doesn't mean it cooled down any, correct. It was run for no longer than 3 minutes after the alarm sounded, just enough time to back it off the hill and enough on the trailer for me to wind it on up. Do you think it will be ok? I run it on the muffs for 10-15 minutes at idle after i cleand the dirt out and no alarms went off

Place hand on head with engine warmed up,You should be able to hold for a six second count without burning fingers,Test#2 You should be able to hold hand in telltale output stream indefinitely!TEST#3 get a accurate reading with a infrared temp gun. 20$ harbor freight tools.

Couldn't find an infrared gun in these backwoods parts places around here but I have a klein multimeter that has a temp reader on it and after 10 mins of idling the powerhead right beside where you screw the plug in was 103° and the stream felt cool. Heading to a bigger city Monday and I'll pick one up.

I've got the pictures posted above, they've been gutted out for some reason. Ordering new ones Monday, just hope the motor runs right when I put them in

The guy I bought it from claims he didn't do it but said alot of people do to keep the engine cooler and let the water flow constantly. I thought water flowed constantly anyway, the old evinrude I have did.

Your engine is designed to run at a specific temp with thermostats opening at 143 degrees, too cold or too hot problems arise IE. plugs fouling, insufficient combustion of fuel charge, carbon buildup on heads&pistons ETC. after installing new stats.run the 3 tests i explained in post #17 Has new water pump been installed yet? Was engine flushed of all salt & sand before new pump install?

Nothing has been replaced yet, plan to order new pump and stats tomorrow when I have some extra money in the bank. All I did was clean the sand out of the plastic plugs that were left where the stats go and run it at idle on the muffs for around 10-15 minutes. I will do the tests after I have the new parts installed and let you know how it went.

What should the temperature be if read on an infrared gun?
Thanks
