I did not check idle 900rpm timing as the damper markings are only from 26°. I will try clean up the damper more to find a 12° marking. However I just notice my distributor is a 008 model and the manual I have is saying to set it at 32-34° @2000rpm? I will give this setting a try and see if...
Yes rechecked the timing was advancing from idle with timing light. Timing would increase upto 26deg at 2000rpm and kept increasing to 2500rpm. I didn't check high rpm being no load. I also check the distributor Weights were not sticking by moving them with a screwdriver, weights and springs...
Ok thanks jimn, I checked everything you suggested and no reaI difference. Also took the boat for a spin yesterday and would not get over 3000rpm under load without backfiring. Also felt like it was running quite rough. When I got back I checked ignition system again and fuel system all checked...
Have test all 7 ignition leads with multimeter - all test ok 5k to 3kohm
Checked distributor - ok
Re gapped points to spec.
Reset timing to spec at 2000rpm - ok
Test GT40 coil and input voltage - ok
Spark plugs gapped 0.7mm
Check all 6 leads with spark tester while motor running and removed...
Hi jimn, unsure of age they are NGK R-8 they don't look very old. Plugs are NGK bp7hs. They are resistive leads 3k to 7k ohm which seems incorrect according to Penta manual stating use non resistive leads?
Thankyou, Volvo Penta manual I have says don't use resistive leads? Seem this engine has 3k to 7k ohm leads (NGK R-8) which looks to give weak spark when i test with the inline spark plug tester. Points and GT40 coil seem to test ok.
Thanks Bt Doctor, will put a ballast resistor in series with the positive to coil. Hopefully it hasn't cooked the condenser as I dont know how long the engine has been running like this.
I have an old AQ170B with points distributor and a Bosch GT40 coil with no ballast resistor in circuit. Is this setup ok to run with or will this eventually cause spark issues??
If not ideal what is the best coil setup for points ignition? Have read conflicting information on these engines...
Hi all i need some tech help! I have a 2002 50hp tldi (MD50A) that runs and seems ok power wise but has a mis or sneeze at mid to low rpm. At wot it sounds normal. I done a warm compression test and all 3 cylinders are 70psi. Also decarb the pistons and basicly same reading. The motor only has...
Hi guys, i have a mariner 30hp or could be merc the serial no on engine block is 0G 000172. I cant find this sn on marineengine and i need to know temp rating of thermostate so i can buy correct one. I have been told year could be late 90s to late 2000s. From what i have found these...
Will moving the low speed indent tab 1 or 2 notches in advance to increase and smooth idle speed be ok?? I dont have the optical timing tool. My outboard runs fine except at idle it never realy sounds right and other day it died at idle aswell. Its a 90hp 1995 60deg looper. I do not know if...
