Have a Bayliner Runabout with a busted AQ120a engine, looking at replacements, any recommendations?

Hi all, I'm refurbishing an old 85 Bayliner Runabout I got for peanuts. It's got an AQ120a on with a 270 outdrive and I want to just put a new motor in it. I'll be totally honest this would be my first time doing this on a boat. I don't think I should limit my options based on the existing...

1972 Mercury 650 65 hp 3 cyl thunderbolt fuel pump issue. A couple questions before proceeding.

Awesome glad to hear it, thank you so much. I'll do this right away and I'm definitely adding a filter to the line before the pump...

1972 Mercury 650 65 hp 3 cyl thunderbolt fuel pump issue. A couple questions before proceeding.

I am just assuming the gunk made its way through the whole system. Or would it have only gotten trapped in the carbs at worst?

1967 650, hard to turn over but not seized. Prop turns when I manually turn engine. Potentially stuck in drive?

Sorry to necro this old thread but just adding on for completeness in case google lands someone here. After my last post here I took it out on the water to find it not starting again. FUN!! The final issue with this motor was that there was rust sediment in the metal gas tank (60 year old tank...

Any way to flush out sediment from the combustion chamber without cracking it open?

Yup, thank you. I replaced these and it works. Sadly I think I best clean the carbs out now because as it turns out there was a TON of sediment sitting in the old metal gas tank.

Thanks! So as I mentioned before (and in my confusion thought it was the part water runs through) there was a ton of debris in the pump itself. I thought it was sand but in hindsight it was the color of rust. I tested the valves with an ungodly method and I believe they're both botched in...

1972 Mercury 650 65 hp 3 cyl thunderbolt fuel pump issue. A couple questions before proceeding.

seems unlikely since it runs as long as i pump fuel manually, but man that would suck hard. The cooling system does run through the fuel pump and had a buttload of sand in it. No corrosion on the water side far as I can tell but I suppose it's time to stop beating around the bush and just crack...

Thanks, I will look into replacing the check valves. Does checking the compression from the spark plug holes not rule out bad crankcase compression? Seems like the fuel pump must also be helping circulate water through the cooling system?

What confuses me the most is that it looks like water from the cooling system is what's on the other side of the diaphragm. Not the actual fuel.

1972 Mercury 650 65 hp 3 cyl thunderbolt fuel pump issue. A couple questions before proceeding.

Hi again all, My goal with this post is mainly to get a better understanding of how these old fuel pumps work. I believe I have issues in the fuel pump on my 650. Compression is 150. It starts, runs for ~15 sec mid-idle, slows down, sputters, dies. Rinse repeat, I have to pump the primer bulb...

    Wont start mariner 30 hp

No that doesn't mean your pump is good it simply means fuel can flow freely through the system. You should check your fuel pump it is often simpler to rebuild than a carb.

1967 650, hard to turn over but not seized. Prop turns when I manually turn engine. Potentially stuck in drive?

Thanks everyone for the help. To close out the thread I have it working again. Plugs were fine (I cleaned them anyway), carbs look brand new... The first (main) problem was the battery after all. The rest was mostly my lack of experience with 2 stroke outboards. I replaced the battery and the...

1967 650, hard to turn over but not seized. Prop turns when I manually turn engine. Potentially stuck in drive?

Thanks for the correction on the model, and the assurance that it is stuck in reverse. I'll replace the gear oil and check the gears for damage. It's probably overdue. The mix was 32:1. The previous owner actually recommended 16:1 but it breaks regs. Perhaps I should have done more research as...

I of course have a lever by the driver's seat which is meant to control throttle and gear. The ignition system won't even try to start if the lever is not in neutral position. In the video, it is in neutral.
