    I am trying to track down a carb kit for my ancient Mercury 9.8 but can't find a match for the serial number anywhere (A707890). Does anyone have any ideas where I might be able to find what I am looking for and why that serial number doesn't show up? Thanks.

    Thanks. I have changed the fuel diaphragm and don't think that is the issue. Appreciate though that fuel could still be part of the problem - it does smoke like a chimney. I am going to run down the coil side of things and should know more after the weekend.

    Was speaking with a mechanic and he said to run it under load and, when it bogs, pull the choke. If it improves it is a fuel issue, if not it is worth continuing to follow the electrical route. Think I am going to replace the coils anyway since I did the spark lines.

    Update: I changed out the spark wire leads and seems to have made a significant difference. Fires up first pull and idles much more comfortably. I have yet to run it in the river under game day conditions so will wait and see how it accelerates. One of the leads I changed had to have the coil...

    9.9hp to 15hp carb compatibility?

    What would the performance impact be of swapping a WMC carb from a 9.9hp Mercury to a 15hp? Is this even possible? I have read about people seeking a performance enhancement by "up carbing" by putting a 15hp on a 9.9 but wondering if this is possible the other way around?

    Carby Removal Seapro 10

    YouTube. Lots of good Mercury/Mariner videos there that will guide you step-by-step through the carb removal/overhaul process. Its pretty easy. I'd just order the gasket kit ahead of time so you can drop it all in.

    Maybe I'll still be having the same trouble when I put it back on the boat and run it under load. Was looking through the manual and trying to tick off all the easy fixes. I've done all the things you have and rebuilt the carb (new gaskets, flushed it out). Spark is good on mine too.

    I am having the same issue (15hp Mariner)- motor idles fine, travels at low speed etc but dies off when I accelerate. I brought it home put it in the barrel and ran it there where it accelerated just fine. Couldn't figure it out and think it may be that that the fuel tank air vent was stuck...
