    Problem was caused by forcing the leg into place and forgetting to align upper shift shaft with intermediate shift shaft, resulting in broken intermediate shift shaft. I replaced the latter. Now, when the lower shift shaft is turned clockwise by hand, the gears click easily into reverse...
