    Water in lower unit

Hi All, I drained my lower unit for the winter. This is the second fall in a row that the lower unit oil looked very milky. The engine is a honda bf40a outboard 40 hp. My guess is it is about 10+ years old. Last year, I found the leak myself. It was at the boot on the shifter lever where it...

    Water in lower unit

Very helpful thoughts. Thank you! I particularly like the idea of re-checking the oil level and topping up if necessary. Mark010

    Water in lower unit

Hi jgmo, I found the leaks and am refilling the lower unit with oil. I thought it would be easier to put the oil in before installing it on the rest of the engine. Also, I somewhere about pausing to let air bubbles rise out of the oil. And, I read somewhere that one should tip the motor down...

    Water in lower unit

Hi jgmo, Sorry for the radio silence on my end. I planned to work on this lower unit back in the fall. But Life got in the way. Now I'm hustling to get it repaired so I can put my pontoon in the lake. So far I found one leak in the lower unit. It's the boot on the shift shaft. Still checking...

    Water in lower unit

Hi, when I drained the lower unit oil this fall on my Honda bf40 outboard, the oil was very milky. I want to stop what must be water getting into the lower unit. Is it worth the trouble of finding the leak, or is it easier to just replace all the gaskets that could be causing the problem...

    Hard Shifting

Progress update: I disconnected both the throttle and shifter cables from the motor. Once they were disconnected, it was obvious there was a bend in the cables just before they go into the lower motor case. So, I did my best to straighten them, and, with them still disconnected from the engine...

    Hard Shifting

Thanks. It is reassuring that it's not likely damage was done by moving that long nut. Going to start isolating variables then.

**** = fit (Google must have thought I said a naughty word there)

    Hard Shifting

And rereading my question, I noticed I forgot to mention that in reconnecting the shifting rod after replacing the impeller, I likely adjusted that long nut to get the shift ride to **** underneath it. I read in another post that that doing that could change the length of the top rod?

    Hard Shifting

Hi gjmo, Thanks for offering your help, again. I thought I had it whipped, too. Your questions are in italics below. Is this a tiller model by chance? No, it is a remote throttle. Could you elaborate on what's happening? Almost takes two hands to move the throttle in and out of...

    Hard Shifting

I have a BF40a Honda outboard that has become extremely hard to shift. This started right after I put the lower unit back on after replacing the impellor. I have read about how to check the cables, but I wonder if I could have messed something up when I put the lower unit back on? I did forget...

Honda BF40A outboard hard to start and only 1 piston is firing.

Hi jgmo, Success! The lower unit (with many new parts ) is back on the motor , and it started right up. On top of that, there was a strong stream of water coming out of the telltale. Thank you so much for all your help. I appreciated your patience and knowledge. Best wishes . Time for me to...

Honda BF40A outboard hard to start and only 1 piston is firing.

I took off the lower unit to replace the water pump. Now I've realized I should have put it in reverse before I removed the lower unit. Is this going to be a problem when I put it back together?

Honda BF40A outboard hard to start and only 1 piston is firing.

Hi jgmo, Good news! I got the carbs back together and reconnected to the engine. One turn of the key, and it popped right off (though hard to tell since it it so quiet :) Next step is likely water pump replacement. I checked for clogs wherever I could stick a piece of weed-eater cord into...

Honda BF40A outboard hard to start and only 1 piston is firing.

    I think I have cleaned everything carb-related. Anything else before I re-assemble?
