at first i had 65 and 70 in cylinders . then totally dismantled the engine. No ridge in cylinder wall, cylinders did look good. Purchased new piston rings. Gap was minimal. broke the glaze carefully in the cylinders with bead hone. Totally back together and still no fire. 70 and 75 psi...
After trying many possibilities, no start. Not even trying to start.
with new piston rings , now have 75 psi and 70 psi. no scoring in cylinders, piston skirts looked good.
took new plugs out and poured gas mixture, plugs right back in - nothing
kill switch disconnected or hooked up- same...
well, i did recieve the correct piston rings. Motor back together and still no start. No ignition at all
compression is now 75 , and 70. Is this enough compression for the engine to start normally ?
do i need a power head or do i have another problem ?
first kit was 18514A4 ring kit-4 std ( mercury marine )
second kit after calling them was 18212A4 ring kit std ( mercury marine )
i only need the piston ring set in stainless steel .024 thousanths. Thank You in advance.
Please help. I'm having trouble purchasing piston rings for my 9.9 Mercury, serial number 0A945913. The old, i,m sure piston rings measure .024 and are stainless steel. I have ordered and called Boats.net to purchase the replacements and they have sent 2 different ring sets that measure .062...
yes, i have a spark tester, good strong spark
i have replaced the trigger, stater, spark box, flywheel key is correct. wires correct at coils. kill switches are good connected and disconnected.
i have the engine completely apart
as i said the engine will not start, has spark, starting fluid in cylinders, no start. that is why i was chasing the low compression.
as a auto mechanic- retired- i have not worked on a engine with reed valves, looking for answers to my no start-
Thank You for...
yes, you are correct. My Snap on guage went to zero and did not hold compression. I tried another end in my kit and it holds. My diagnosis skills are rusty.
now - where to get a gasket kit from, reed valve plate has some rust.
chasing this no start down- has spark, took plugs out and sprayed...
the gauge has never failed. It is a snap on unit that i used a few days ago that i had the 65 and 80 readings
would a exhaust plate gasket blow out be the cause of 0 compression in both? Any ideas ?
i was reading that over 100 psi is correct. I was convinced it had a carbon build-up. Ok not the best choice or idea. The why 0 compression in both now? I only found a blown gasket at the exhaust cover near the spark plugs
recently purchased a 9.9 Mercury outboard. Had 65 PSI in one cylinder and 80 in the other. I installed the Bars Leak High Mileage engine repair.
Let it sit for 2 days, with the plugs out, cleared the cylinders by pulling the flywheel by hand- rope start- then checked compression and has zero in...
