Update. I used the silver looking gasket from Barr and so far no leaks. In fact the engine runs better than it has since first installing it two seasons ago. I suspected a leak and that is why I removed it. Lesson learned is, Check these things for flatness and any other issues that might cause...
Which I have done and it looks really clean and smooth. However, laying a straight edge along the length of it. I can see a small amount of light underneath in the middle. This is what has me concerned and wondering if maybe I am being too picky?
I have been working on it and the surface looks good. It's the amount of curvature I see end to end. Just a very small amount of light under the straight edge.

What is everyone's preferred manifold gasket? My new manifold came with the silver colored type but the old manifold gasket was more of a fiber looking gasket. Don't want ANY leaks!
Does anyone know which carb mounting gasket should be used? Brand new combo header and carb but there are two different gaskets. One is an open hole and the other has a bar in the middle. Going on a Merc 3.0.
So I replaced my Alpha 1 gen II water pump impeller for the first time which was pretty easy but when assembling the unit back together, I forgot to put the little plastic sleeve back on the water pipe. Crap! Is this a necessary part? Doesn't look like it really does anything except maybe help...
Okay I installed a new GM 3.0L in my 2001 Sea Ray 180 and everything is ready to go. It runs but I am a little unsure of where to set the timing. Do I go by the manual for the boat year or should I go by the Engine year?
