Removing calcification from Honda BF15 (or BF20D)

The circular plate is near the bottom, a little right of center. I drilled a small hole and pulled it out because someone told me there was an adjustment screw there. Wrong. I’m guessing has something to do with manufacturing process. I can try to get a decent pic of the inside if you would like.

Flush muff brand for Honda bf15d bf20d

I did that, the muffs I bought fit over the intake ports fine, the main problem is that the surface around them is not flat. Maybe I can heat them up and reform to my topography.

Flush muff brand for Honda bf15d bf20d

I bought a west marine rectangular flush muff but it did not fit the water intakes at all for my motor. Is there an an available one that will work for my BF15d, or is there a work-around to customize my muffs?

Removing calcification from Honda BF15 (or BF20D)

Thanks. I returned the next morning and it ran fine, although I didn’t run it for very long, maybe 5 minutes. My theory of why it died after 30 minutes and wouldn’t run well after that is heating not detected by the overheat sensor. Since I never run for more than 5 or 10 minutes, I decided to...

Removing calcification from Honda BF15 (or BF20D)

Had to replace the gas because it had water in it but after that, ran great for 30 minutes at the dock at high idle, no overheating. Yay. Then it died. I restarted but it sounded awful, wouldn’t run above idle and if I put it in gear or tried to increase above idle, it sounded way off balance...

Removing calcification from Honda BF15 (or BF20D)

I stopped by the local Honda shop and the mechanic was nice enough to look at the pics and thought things looked ok, so now I'm going to try to get it started and see where I’m at. Expecting some trouble but hoping for none …

Removing calcification from Honda BF15 (or BF20D)

I took the exhaust port cover and gasket off and flushed via flush valve. You can see water coming in at upper right which looks like it is distributed to the exhaust port hole and down to the port in the prop. Does this look normal? The second pic, same flushing, shows water coming out at the...

Removing calcification from Honda BF15 (or BF20D)

I haven’t made any progress but noticed that while flushing from flush valve, there is outflow water gushing from the front of the lower unit from the lower rubber mount cover. I initially took that as progress, but maybe that is a clue. Could I have put things back together wrong? Anyway, I’ll...

Removing calcification from Honda BF15 (or BF20D)

I went years in salt water without fresh water flushing and I am now paying the price. Major blockage causing overheating (limp mode). No water flow out of exhaust port. Have replaced impeller and thermostat, tried Barnacle Buster, still no water flow out of exhaust port either running or using...

    Honda BF20 overheat warning

I’m baaaack. Ran fine for a while and then again the next day. Then tried to start and no go. Thinking maybe vapor separator (aka fuel chamber) between fuel pump and carb. Will try to clean or replace. Thoughts?

    Honda BF20 overheat warning

Ok, I disconnected fuel hose after fuel filter and squeezed bulb: got fuel. Reconnected then disconnected fuel intake to carb and squeezed bulb: got fuel. Then pushed starter … and did not get fuel. Figured problem might be fuel pump. Reconnected and pushed starter … and it ran! Put covers on...

    Honda BF20 overheat warning

Well, I checked the spark under a blanket and it was there, so I’ve been chasing the wrong scenario! I did observe something interesting before I checked the spark, namely that measuring resistance across thermo sensor showed it as an open circuit. The temp was around 50 degrees. So back to my...

    Honda BF20 overheat warning

One mechanic pal thought it might be the stop switch. I tested and it works fine. Another mechanic thought that my conclusion that I was getting no spark may be false because the spark is really hard to see and the motor is outdoors. I’ll test under a blanket tomorrow and report anything useful...

    Honda BF20 overheat warning

Can I jump in here? I’m new to forum. I’ve been on a long journey chasing an overheating problem and rough starting problem. Got everything working beautifully (new carb, impeller, all cooling outflow clear including telltale). Ran for 5 minutes, I was in heaven. Put the lower covers on and now...
