    Merc 650 4cyl Merc 500

    Is there any reason to pick a Merc 500 over a Merc 650 ? We are talking 68 to 71 or up to 72 on the 500. I realize the 650 is slightly more powerful but doesn't it turn a larger gear train? On the other hand the 500 is lighter and revs higher and better on fuel. Boat is between 1000 and 1500...

    1970 or 71 Mercury 650 with cracked power unit What do you think?

    I am thinking about this engine as it has many new parts and runs well but has some physical issues. See pic Apparently it was hairline crack. Motor runs well. Looks great otherwise. Should I get involved in this? Can I put my 68 or 69 lower unit on it? I know the gearing is different. Thanks

    Hi, As I understand it 1968 and 1969 Mercury 650 motors are pretty much the same. I also under stood 1970 and 1971 are the same .
