    So, the culprit was not brass, but metal - explains what's gone wrong! See attached. They're actually ½" NPT.

    Mystery solved - hopefully - it's a 5/16 square plug drive, have sourced one from a mate - will try tomorrow ... And the drive in the image is a 3/8"

    So, now have the manifold and riser off. This drain plug is not three-eighths or ¼, nor is it a hex head fitting? I'm just wondering if anybody else has ever removed one of these and what tool they used?

    Yes, will make the most of the access and remove/refit, clean and lube affected parts on both engines.

    Good point, will replace, probably both, with square head type - which obviously triples the thickness at play.

    Yes, I meant I need to find the replacement water jacket drain plug - from which I'll be able to work out the exact tool to pull out the old one.
