78' Evinrude 35HP build up is still running perfectly 20 hrs. Follow Up.

Hello all. Just a quick check in to say that the 78' Evinrude 35HP powerhead that I built is running very well. It idles very low and smooth and at wide open throttle in calm water with just me in the boat I am running 31mph. Half throttle cruise is a comfortable 21mph. No oil leaks and the...

    Drilling out carb jets

You guys are a hoot! I play blues guitar also. I love the electric and I have a Telecaster that is like my right hand. I am just retired (Geologist) so I have time now to pursue my hobbies - flying, woodworking, boat building, etc. I own a cattle ranch in Texas and where I live is surrounded by...

    Drilling out carb jets

TimGuy mentioned in another thread about drilling out the jets using machinist drill and this has got my curiosity up. I have a spare 35HP type II carb laying around that I want to rebuild and try out. Are you drilling out the high speed orifice in the float bowl or are you drilling out the...

Small lead shot ball in the carburetor?

1978 35HP 35853R While ordering a carb rebuild kit I noticed in the parts diagram there is a small led shot item #2 in the low speed port in front of the needle. My carb did not have this in there and the rebuild kit does not have it either. What exactly is the purpose of this lead shot? Thanks!

Break-in tips for 1978 Evinrude 35 HP new build.

Today I started my new motor that I built for the first time and it cranked instantly and idles very nicely. I started with 1 1/4 turns on the low speed and it is smooth with that. Overall the engine is running very smooth and quiet with no internal noise or ticks and is pumping water good. I am...

1978 Evinrude 35 hp Firing one side only out of power pack

I sure could use a little advice here. 1978 Evinrude 35 HP model 35853R I have rebuilt the motor with all new ignition components. Under the flywheel I have a new charge coil and a new sensor. I have a new power pack and new ignition coils. I have good grounds on everything. I have installed...

Where does this hose connect to? It goes from the nipple on the manifold in front of the drain valve. Item number 27 on the diagram. Thanks!

    Stators on small engines

I am planning on adding an electric start to the 1978 35hp that I am rebuilding. I also added an electric start on my 1968 18hp Fastwin. I have a delicate back and I just cannot pull much anymore without injuring myself. I do not plan on putting a stator on the 35hp just as I did not on my...

    1978 Evinrude 35 HP Lower Seal O-Ring

I am assembling this lower seal unit. I am unable to understand exactly where the o-ring part number 307239 is supposed to go on the bottom of the seal unit. I have replaced the seal and the top o-ring 319662. Does this go between the seal unit and the exhaust housing? It seems to fit there. The...

Here are some photos of how the case opening is too small. Here is a comparison of the bearing openings to a normal 25 HP case on the right

    Upper crankshaft bearing size?

I have a 1978 25hp block that I am rebuilding. The upper crankshaft bearing and seal machined openings appear to be a smaller size than normal. I have a bearing from another motor of the same type, but it is slightly larger than the opening on this block. The seal looks to be slightly too big...

What are the main differences between a 1980 Evinrude 25 hp and a 35 hp?

Hello all and thanks for letting me join the forum! I am rebuilding a 1980 Evinrude 25hp and I am wondering what are the main differences between a 25 and 35hp? Am I correct to understand it's the same engine block and maybe just a carburetor difference? Any information would be much appreciated!
