Sheared bolt in lower unit - no access

You're welcome, now you need to deal with the broken bolt, did you manage to get it out? More heat and vice grips to unscrew it out of housing.

Sheared bolt in lower unit - no access

It will come apart, I once spent 14 hours trying to remove two gear cases on a pair of 2003 75hp Mercs from Naples, Florida. They had never been apart in 10 years in salt water. I had to pull both powerheads to get the driveshafts free so with heat and a dead blow hammer ,wiggling, wedges and...

Sheared bolt in lower unit - no access

There is salt packed between the bolt and the housing. You will need to heat the housing around the bolt to expand the aluminum to release the salt grip. Use propane or MAPP gas torch to get the job done. Heat in circles around the stuck bolt. Do not directly heat the bolt stub. The goal is to...

Not sure what I have (I did look at Evinrude & Johnson model numbers)

I looked at 1941 also, the 41 and 47 were the same engine since WWII put a stop to outboard production for the aluminum needs to support the war effort. I think your engine is missing some parts.

    85 Johnson oil retainer seal

Pretty sure you need to pull the bearing carrier out and drive out the seal body from the opposite direction. In any case, it is critical not to nick or scratch the prop shaft where the seal lip rides.

Gearcase Finish Loss - Cause for Ongoing Concern?

Establish a new maintenance schedule. Change the gearoil, engine oil and filter, water separating fuel filter, engine fuel filter, pull the prop and grease the propshaft and check for fishing line that could cut your propshaft seal. I would do a waterpump service as well. Everything I own is...
