No need for crank shims? 1984 Merc 35 HP S/N 06491413

Hi All, I'm rebuilding a 1984 Merc 35 HP with serial number 06491413. We got the new crank and pistons in (0.030 over). I have the SELOC manual for this motor. In the manual, it says this (step 15), "On all models except the Mercury Model 402 (1972-78), 40 (40 hp 1979-83), and 35 hp (1984 & on)...

1984 35 hp rebuild - reed block / main bearing question

Mostly getting parts from this website (marineengine) and ebay. I had to order an entire gasket kit to get gaskets because I couldn't find them individually. My marine repair shop said they get most gains from grinding the intake and exhaust ports on the sleeves to match the holes in the block...

1984 Mercury 35 hp rebuild - top end cap question

Hi all, I’m rebuilding an ‘84 Mercury 35 HP with serial number 06491413. I ordered a new top end cap (part number 1167-8277A 1) and bearing (part number 31-62066). When both parts arrived, I was surprised to see a bearing and seal already installed in the end cap, but the installed bearing is...

1984 35 hp rebuild - reed block / main bearing question

We just got the new pistons in, I am 3D printing a piston rod tool that holds the needle bearings in place while the wrist pin is inserted. I plan on following the manual and installing the pistons to rods, then rods to crank before dropping the whole shebang in the block. I still have to buy...

1984 35 hp rebuild - reed block / main bearing question

Here is a picture. It looks gnarly if those ridges would actually clamp onto the crank journal. But maybe it's designed that way so oil reaches it (and maybe that's why there's a pin hole in the back)?

1984 35 hp rebuild - reed block / main bearing question

Hi all, I'm rebuilding a 1984 35 hp engine with serial number 06491413. I bought a used powerhead block that was empty of parts and I'm building it with new parts before swapping it with my existing old powerhead so I don't have a visual reference of these parts outside of the diagrams. This is...

    Mercury outboard 40hp Overhaul ?

Hello, I am rebuilding a 35 HP 2 stroke, but it is quite a bit older than yours I think. Mine is a 1984. I haven't had luck finding a rebuild kit. This website (marineengine.com) has been awesome to order most parts from, but I had to find some new parts as new old stock on ebay, etc.

'84 35 hp - Bore scope showed scaring, but nearly perfect compression

Thanks, good call. If I get a used motor, I probably need to get one from a dealer that bore scopes the cylinders so I don't end up in the same situation, or buy a scope and tell the private party I need to take a peek before buying. I have rebuilt many automotive engines and have a great...

'84 35 hp - Bore scope showed scaring, but nearly perfect compression

Hi all, I have a 1984 35 hp mercury 2 stroke (serial number 06491413) on a 1986 MV-16 basstracker. I got the boat for a very good deal and want to use it as a first boat for my 14 year old son to learn on who just got his boating license. Compression tested it and it came back near perfect with...

1984 Mercury 35 hp tilt and trim or just trim?

Hi All, I am looking at options for adding tilt and trim to my '84 Mercury with serial number 06491413. I see some people purchase the components (new and used) and convert the motor or just buy a universal tilt and trim system that you mount your motor to and mount on the transom. When looking...

Fuel Line connector for '84 Mercury 35 HP

Hi all, I bought a new fuel line connector, part number 22831Q 3 to add to my new quicksilver gray fuel line. The brass nipple in the package was not attached to the connector at the factory. Should I put Gasolia or any other type of fuel safe sealant on the threads before I install the nipple...
