I have the manual. I just looked and it seems your 20hp and my 9.9 are the same as far as the electricals.
It looks like I can test resistances for the rectifier so ill do that. There's a table with expected resitances. Can I just put the voltmeter on the two grey wires coming off the charge...
I miss the old 2 strokes. I decided to buy one as a backup while I figure this out on dry land. I didn't want to lose the rest of the season. I joke that the only thing more simple than the 78 johnson is a paddle. It's also like 50lbs so much more manageable for small lakes and such.
Honestly I...
I have an update today, didn't mean to leave anyone hanging. I ended up buying a 1978 4hp Johnson and was using it to push the boat, it does surprisingly well. 3.5kn on a 22ft catalina in a 10kn headwind.
I finally got around to replacing the coil today. The engine ran for about 90mins, with...
I assume I'm doing this after removing all the jets and disassembled as much as can be?
I won't be able to tinker until this Saturday. I'm going to try the coil first because it's quick and I'll let you know.
I'll have to trace the wires back to the front of the motor and then to the battery to see which he connected. It keeps blowing the fuse so I wonder if he just revered + and - on the battery terminals. Last we used lights in the boat they worked though so I don't know if he charged it otherwise...
That is perfect. I appreciate it. I was thinking that's how it should be. I can trace the wires back and make sure the PO hooked it up to the battery the right way. So the problems are likely unrelated.
I wasn't as worried about the 8.1 either. I'm going to go ahead and replace the ignition...
I lied and did some late night investigating with my voltmeter.
Exciter coil resistance was 8.1ohm. Max for 6A is 7.5ohm.
Primary ignition was 1.5ohm, max is 0.43ohm.
Secondary ignition and pulse generator were within spec. Guess I'm buying those parts and trying that.
No power/trim tilt.
The fuse may be a red herring. I need to look to see how the PO has it hooked up, maybe he just put it on backwards.
Well, full choke would mean richer right? So meaning it would run on a super super rich mixture while warm (choke and throttle). This was not easy to do, it...
Okay, so my mechanically inclined neighbor who knows more than me came over and we tinkered some more.
Firstly, all the plugs seemed to be in the right place, matching colors. The only uncertain connect was two grey wires coming off the regulator/rectifier going forward toward the tiller...
Okay. I'll try to reply to individual ideas.
Yes. Pull start only. I have the green lamp which works when running or a good pull. Have never a red lamp. At one failure the engine did throttle down and then die, but only once. Otherwise it just dies and will not restart.
I have seen the choke...
This has been driving me crazy since I bought it with the boat a few weeks ago. The engine will start with choke, run normally, restart normally (1 pull), and then after about 30 mins of use it just dies. It then cannot be restart unless sitting for hours.
Thus far I have:
1) Cleaned the...
