    I assume I'm doing this after removing all the jets and disassembled as much as can be? I won't be able to tinker until this Saturday. I'm going to try the coil first because it's quick and I'll let you know.

    I'll have to trace the wires back to the front of the motor and then to the battery to see which he connected. It keeps blowing the fuse so I wonder if he just revered + and - on the battery terminals. Last we used lights in the boat they worked though so I don't know if he charged it otherwise...

    That is perfect. I appreciate it. I was thinking that's how it should be. I can trace the wires back and make sure the PO hooked it up to the battery the right way. So the problems are likely unrelated. I wasn't as worried about the 8.1 either. I'm going to go ahead and replace the ignition...

    I lied and did some late night investigating with my voltmeter. Exciter coil resistance was 8.1ohm. Max for 6A is 7.5ohm. Primary ignition was 1.5ohm, max is 0.43ohm. Secondary ignition and pulse generator were within spec. Guess I'm buying those parts and trying that.
