    I think it's a 1988 Johnson 175, some things don't add up....

Update, because of varying compression numbers and the mix matched parts I looked and bought a 1990 175 Evinrude that is complete and has 120psi across all cylinders and will focus my attention on that engine instead.

1983 Johnson 150, do I have a carb or compression problem

Update, because of varying compression numbers and the mix matched parts I looked and bought a 1990 175 Evinrude with controls that is complete and has 120psi across all cylinders and will focus my attention on that engine instead.

1983 Johnson 150, do I have a carb or compression problem

Let’s say that the cylinder walls were damaged, maybe where the piston is covering it up when it’s at the bottom of the stroke. Would the next recommendation be to have the block board out and try to find oversize pistons? Can any Automotive machine shop bore or does that require a specialty shop?

1983 Johnson 150, do I have a carb or compression problem

83 block and heads, 89ignition, 88 175 exhaust housing because it was originally a 1988 175 Motor runs but is hard to start and has misfire. Compression numbers: 1: 95 2: 100 3: 100 4: 90 5: 95 6: 100 I had the heads off and the pistons have carbon buildup but the cylinder wall didn’t...

The title says it all, any recommendations for a Johnson mechanic in SOCAL? I am throwing in the towel.

    I think it's a 1988 Johnson 175, some things don't add up....

I understand the layout of the engine and how the reed valve's function. I am asking if there is a test procedure that exists or how to practically quantify the crank case pressure. Is there a port available to connect a pressure gauge to? I am up to speed on the 2 stroke basics, just a little...

    I think it's a 1988 Johnson 175, some things don't add up....

Sorry I meant, electrode. How do I test the crankcase compression. Thats a new one for me? It does seem like its running fairly ok on the other 4 cyl

    I think it's a 1988 Johnson 175, some things don't add up....

Cylinder compression is good, ill pull a plug tonight and see if it's wet after running it for a few minutes..... also how important are the correct plugs. Right now it has these champion plugs that re new to me, they don't have the little tab at the bottom that you would normally gap, the diode...

    I think it's a 1988 Johnson 175, some things don't add up....

Ok, I moved a good coil to the misfiring cylinder and the cylinder is still dead. The odd thing is that when I pull the sparkplug boot off the dead cylinder (6) i can see a spark jumping from the boot that I am holding about 1/2 inch away to the sparkplug. Any thoughts. I feel like maybe I have...

Do you have a 1989 150 (non-fast strike)??? Can you help me out with a photo?

Hi, Can someone be so kind and help me out with a photo of how your power pack is mounted. You might think that this is a simple question or easily searchable, but I assure you I have spent hours trying to find a photo of a non-fast strike 1989 150. The power pack is the single unit...

    I think it's a 1988 Johnson 175, some things don't add up....

Update: I got a tub of water instead of muffs, started the engine this morning and pulled off sparkplug boots one at a time. I found the cylinders 2 and 4 are not firing. I am happy because I finally found something concrete that is affecting the ability to idle. I am going to swap coils around...

@faztbullet what if it’s a 150 replacement powerhead that has a 175 exhaust because that’s what the mid section was compatible with. I got it started, I can’t get it to idle. I can keep it running with the throttle cracked but if I got to what should be idle it dies.

    I think it's a 1988 Johnson 175, some things don't add up....

Update: The high-speed jet is a 56C, which is a 150HP jet size The ignition components are 1989 150 Johnson Stator: 583837 Timer Base: 583715 Power Pack: 584043 Coil: 582508 The exhaust cover according to @racerone is 175? Can this engine run with the mismatched exhaust and ignition?
